SPOTLIGHT June 2009: Florian Mueck - The Festival - One Week, One Europe

June 9th, 2009

This month’s spotlight shines on ENB member Florian Mueck and his pro-European movement The Festival.

The Festival brings the European idea to life.

Driven by the experiences during his ERASMUS exchange year in Barcelona in 1997/98, Florian had this dream to move the spirit of European togetherness to a broader level for a long time. But it was not until October 2006 when he came up with the idea to create the biggest pan- and pro-European movement ever.

What began as a intangible idea – a mega celebration for people from all over Europe – has turned into a concrete online and mega event driven project.

Florian states that: “By the year 2050 Europeans will acount for 3% of the world’s population. If we do not start to work on a narrative together today, we will end up simply insignificant. We consider The Festival a gigantic team-building activity on a European level. When you play soccer you know that you have to know your fellow team-members. If not, the team plays badly. The Festival brings the European idea to life, because we can only experience Europe and create some sort of a European identity, if we come together. The Festival is that platform.”

At The Festival more then 3 million people from all over Europe connect through lifestyle tracks; art, cuisine, fashion, film, music, and sports.

The Festival, a 100% privately funded venture based on corporate sponsorship, will be celebrated for the first time in Berlin from July 2 to July 9 2011.

A second edition is planned to take place in Barcelona in 2013.
